Who is Your Champion?

In this powerful exploration of Romans 5:12-21, we encounter one of Scripture's most profound truths: the concept of representation. Using the imagery of ancient champion warfare—where one warrior's victory or defeat determined the fate of entire armies—we discover how all humanity stands under a representative. Adam, our first champion, fell to sin in the Garden of Eden, and through his disobedience, condemnation and death spread to all of us. This isn't merely about imitating Adam's choices; we inherit his fallen condition. Every funeral we attend, every pain we experience, every struggle with sin traces back to that original fall. But here's where the gospel becomes breathtakingly beautiful: while we were born into Adam, we can be born again into Christ. Jesus, the second Adam, stands as our new representative through His perfect obedience. The comparison isn't even close—where sin increased, grace increased all the more. Adam's one act of disobedience brought condemnation, but Christ's one act of obedience on the cross brings justification and eternal life to all who believe. This message challenges us with an unavoidable question: who is our champion? There's no neutral ground, no fence to sit on. We either remain in Adam, walking in guilt, shame, and spiritual death, or we choose Christ and receive forgiveness, adoption, and a completely new identity. The most remarkable part? Once Christ becomes our representative, He then chooses us to represent Him—not in fighting cosmic battles, but in the beautiful work of rescue, pointing others who are still in Adam toward the bread of life.
